Determining the True Problems

The challenges in our library stem from the fact that it is an older school in need of a refresh. Furniture that was once deemed “appropriate” for a library is extremely outdated and unsanitary. Wood and fabric were the norm which only created boxy, heavy to move chairs that can only be cleaned by steam and most stains do not come out of the fabric over time. The tables and standing bookcases are also heavy, large, and not moveable, which creates a stagnant inflexible space for students and teachers alike. These areas of improvement would drastically change the function of the library into a fluid and flexible learning environment conducive to all learners. Being able to clean our chairs would mean a healthier environment to work in, allowing students to clean up their own spills, and having moveable, stackable chairs and tables would create collaborative spaces for everyone to enjoy. If we could find a smaller half bookcase with casters, this would allow us to move a whole bookshelf of books if we needed more space for meetings etc. not to mention the amount of light it would let in through to the rest of the library.

The Goal: Refine and improve library space that will improve collaborative learning for students and teachers.
